What credit score do I need to buy a house?

The number depends on the loan type. Conventional loans, the most common way homes get bought in this area, open up with most lenders at a score around 620 and up, with down payments as low as 3% for qualified buyers. VA loans have no score minimum set by the VA itself, but most lenders want to see roughly 620.

FHA loans exist for buyers with thinner credit: at 580 or higher you qualify for the minimum 3.5% down, and scores as low as 500 can still qualify with a 10% down payment. Below that, the practical move is rebuilding the score before you buy.

Pull your score before you talk to a lender, and ask which program fits your exact number. One credit score does not decide your future as a buyer; it decides which loan gets you the best deal.
