The right number comes from your actual budget, not a headline formula. Start with what you bring home each month, subtract your fixed expenses, your savings goals, and the variable costs you already live with, and see what is left for housing.
On top of the rent itself, count utilities, internet, renter's insurance, parking, and the cost of the move: application fees, a security deposit, and furnishing the place. A rent that fits the rent check but breaks the rest of your month is not affordable.
Landlords will ask about income, and you may need a stable rental history or a cosigner if you are just starting out. If renting is a stop before buying, the same budget discipline transfers directly to a mortgage, and I can show you that path whenever you are ready.
